| Tips from Dr. Burns to stay cavity free *Brush with fluoride tooth paste for 2 minutes at least twice daily and floss once per day. Make sure the brush is extending all the way to the gum line. See the link above for proper technique. *Avoid a high carbohydrate diet, especially sticky food that become lodged in grooves and between teeth. Examples of these foods are chewy candy, dried fruits, breads, and high starch foods. The bacteria that cause cavities use carbs to create acids, which decay teeth. *Avoid snacking between meals. If you are going to have snacks, eat dairy products, vegetables, and other low carbohydrate foods. *Avoid overconsumption of Soft drinks, sweetened teas, and juices. I always say that I would rather see patients drink a two liter for lunch, than sip on a can of Coke throughout the day. The acid in these drinks give bacteria the proper environment to create tooth decay. If you are sipping on a Coke all afternoon, then those bacteria (sugar bugs) are causing cavities all afternoon. It takes about 20 minutes for the saliva to neutralize these acids. Try to keep soft drinks to meal time, and sip on water. *Go to the dentist every six months for a cleaning and check-up. This will allow us to catch cavities early, and catch cavity forming problems before they get started. |
